If you haven't done so already, begin a folder of magazine clippings of living spaces you like. Make notes about what you like best and what it is that you don't like.

Visit a local appliance store. Before you meet with a designer for a floor plan you have to know what kind of appliances you want. Have you ever stood in front of a 36" and 42" refrigerator and "felt" the difference? There are so many wonderful new products for everywhere in your home. How about a warming drawer in your bathroom for towels and robes?
